Book Review |Chapter 3 Summary – The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt
Chapter 3 of The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt focuses on the decline of what he calls “play-based childhood” and its replacement with a more restricted, adult-managed upbringing.
Haidt argues that, beginning in the late 20th century, children were given less freedom to engage in unstructured, unsupervised play, especially outdoors with peers. Rising parental fears (around safety, crime, and liability), combined with cultural shifts toward intensive parenting, led to kids spending more time in organized activities or under direct adult supervision.
This loss of independent play matters because free play is how children naturally develop critical life skills: risk assessment, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and resilience. Without it, Haidt suggests, kids may become more anxious, less confident, and less capable of handling everyday challenges.
The chapter sets up a key idea in the book: that overprotection in the real world (less independence) is happening at the same time as under-protection in the digital world (more exposure online). This imbalance, he argues, is a major contributor to rising anxiety and mental health issues in younger generations.
In short: Chapter 3 argues that kids today are safer but less independent—and that the decline of free play has weakened their ability to cope, making them more vulnerable to anxiety.
Jump Rope for Heart
This month we kick off Jump Rope for Heart! Our school has registered @HeartandStroke's #JumpRopeForHeart!
This event teaches our students the importance of giving back and encourages them to learn the EASY healthy habits, so they understand the importance of staying active, eating well and taking care of their heart and brain health.
The funds our school raises will help support important heart and brain research funded by Heart & Stroke. Let's work together as a school community and show how generous we can be!
Our Event Date is scheduled for April 23, 2026.
