Swimming | Grade 1-3 except Miss Hansen

Students in Grades 1-3 (except Miss Hansen’s) class will be swimming this week. To help make the transition at the pool smoother, please have your child wear their swimsuit under their clothes when they come to school. In addition, remember to pack a towel, undergarments for after swimming, and an extra snack, as students are often hungry after their lesson.

Lost and Found | Being donated on Dec. 19 @ 12:30pm

Please swing by this week to visit the lost and found to retrieve any items your child may have lost this year. Items will be donated on December 19th at 12:30 pm, so please make sure you visit the school before Friday to view what is there!

 Spirit Days this Week

To finish the week and head into the holidays, we will have the following events this week:

Thursday – Red / Green Day | Wear as much Red and Green as you can find!

Friday – Pajama Day | Show off your best PJs on the final day before winter break!

Friday – Caroling | We will have caroling in the gym from 9-9:30 on Friday for all students!

Gay Straight Alliance | First Meeting in January

In the new year, BHS will be hosting our first Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Club for students. We know there may be some questions around this, so we have provided a short Q&A below to give you some more information.

Q - What is a GSA?

A - Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) are student clubs made up of students with diverse sexual orientations and/or gender identities as well as allies (e.g., cisgender, heterosexual students). There are also teachers who serve as advisors.

Q - What is the purpose of a GSA?

A - The purpose of GSAs is to provide much needed spaces in which 2SLGBTQ+ students and allies have a safe place to meet and connect. These groups also work together to make their schools more welcoming for students with diverse sexual orientations and/or gender identities.

Q - Who is the club for?

A - The clubs is open to all students to foster a sense of belonging and respect for diversity.

Q - What will happen during the first GSA meeting?

A -  Students will be creating club norms, sharing ways to create a sense of community and belonging, and deciding on a name for the club.

If you have any questions about the GSA, please email me at saross@cbe.ab.ca.

Dates of Significance

Hanukkah — Dec. 14 to Dec. 22

Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, celebrates the resilience of the Jewish people and the miracle of the Temple’s oil burning for eight nights. Families light the menorah from the evening of December 14, share traditional foods, exchange gifts, and honor themes of hope, dedication, and spiritual renewal.

Winter Solstice / Yule — December 21

The Winter Solstice and Yule both mark the shortest day and longest night of the year, symbolizing the turning point toward returning light. Many cultures honour this moment with rituals celebrating rest, renewal, and the promise of brighter days as the sun begins its slow seasonal ascent.

Christmas — December 25

Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus and is celebrated with traditions that blend faith, family, and festivity. Lights, gift-giving, music, and shared meals create a sense of joy and generosity, reflecting themes of hope, goodwill, and the spirit of togetherness during wintertime.

Kwanzaa — December 26 to January 1

Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration honouring African heritage and the values that strengthen community. Over seven days — from December 26 to January 1 — it highlights principles such as unity, purpose, creativity, and collective responsibility. Families light the kinara, share traditions, and reflect on cultural pride and shared progress.
