Book Review | Chapter 9 Summary – The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt
In Chapter 9, Jonathan Haidt shifts from diagnosing the problem to explaining how it can be solved through collective action. He pushes back against the common belief that it is too late to reverse the harms of a phone based childhood, arguing that societies have often stepped in to correct widespread problems once the risks became clear. The issue, he explains, is not that people are unaware of the harm, but that they feel stuck in a system they cannot change on their own.
Haidt describes the situation as a collective action problem. Children feel pressure to get smartphones and join social media so they are not excluded from their peer group, while parents feel pressure to provide these devices so their children are not left out. At the same time, schools and tech companies reinforce the norm, even if they recognize the negative impact. As a result, everyone participates in a system they may not fully support, because opting out individually comes with social costs.
He explains that this dynamic is similar to other social dilemmas, where individual decisions that seem reasonable lead to worse outcomes when everyone makes the same choice. Without coordination, people unintentionally create and maintain harmful conditions. In the case of smartphones and social media, the outcome is a widespread shift away from a play based childhood toward a more isolating, screen dominated one.
The key idea of the chapter is that individual effort is not enough to solve the problem. Real change requires coordinated action across families, schools, and broader systems. When people act together, the social pressure reverses and healthier norms become possible. This chapter sets up the rest of the book by emphasizing that meaningful change depends on collective agreement and shared action, not isolated decisions.
Parking for After School Pick-up
This is a reminder to please follow all posted street signs during morning drop off and after school pick up.
Vehicles are not permitted to park between the crosswalks on Bermuda Drive. Parking in these areas significantly reduces visibility and creates unsafe conditions for students who are trying to cross the road.
We appreciate your support in keeping our students safe.

We are currently looking for donations of extra pants for our office. Sizes that fit Kindergarten to Grade 3 students (approximately size 6–12 or XS–XL) are most helpful.
Gently used items are very much appreciated, as long as they are clean. Sweatpants or track pants with elastic waistbands are ideal.
If you are able to help, please send donations to the school office. Thank you for supporting our students!
