Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Celebration of Learning for Grades 2, 3, and 5! We are so proud of our students, who did an incredible job sharing their learning around multiculturalism and family traditions, Indigenous ways of knowing, and fractions.
A special highlight of the event was the fantastic dance club performance, along with the wonderful musical performances by our students—what an amazing showcase of talent and creativity!
We also extend our sincere thanks to our teachers for their hard work and dedication in preparing students for this meaningful experience. It was truly a celebration to remember!
No School on Friday | Maatoomsii'Pookaiks
Please note that there will be no school for students this Friday, as teachers will be engaged in a system-wide Indigenous Professional Learning Day called Maatoomsii'Pookaiks.
We appreciate your support as our staff continue to deepen their learning in this important area.
Book Review | Chapter 5 Summary – The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt
Chapter 5 of The Anxious Generation shifts from describing the problem to examining why the rapid move to phone-based childhood has been so harmful, especially for adolescents.
Haidt focuses on four key ways social media disrupts healthy development:
1. Social deprivation
Kids are spending less time in face-to-face interaction, which is essential for learning social skills, reading emotions, and building real relationships. Online interaction is a weaker substitute and often leaves kids feeling lonelier.
2. Sleep deprivation
Phones—especially social media—interfere with sleep through late-night use, notifications, and blue light exposure. Poor sleep is strongly linked to anxiety, depression, and emotional instability.
3. Attention fragmentation
Constant notifications and short-form content train the brain to expect rapid stimulation, making it harder to focus deeply on schoolwork or sustained activities. This contributes to academic struggles and stress.
4. Addiction
Social media platforms are designed to be habit-forming. The reward systems (likes, comments, streaks) keep kids coming back repeatedly, often leading to compulsive use and reduced self-control.
Haidt argues that these four factors don’t operate in isolation—they compound each other, creating a feedback loop that amplifies mental health issues. For example, poor sleep worsens emotional regulation, which makes social media interactions feel more intense, which then increases usage.
Big idea of the chapter:
It’s not just what kids are doing online—it’s that phone-based childhood systematically replaces the core experiences (sleep, play, focus, real interaction) that adolescents need for healthy brain development.
Spring Family Dance | Hosted by Parent Association
Get ready to jump, spin, and groove into spring! Join us for a fun-filled dance party packed with music and plenty of smiles. Kids can show off their best moves, make new friends, and celebrate the arrival of this new season.
Join us on Thursday, April 23 from 6-8pm for our Spring Dance. All BHS students and their families are welcome to join in the fun. We require that students attend the dance with a responsible adult. This adult must remain onsite with their child. We will be running a concession with small snack items (for a cash fee) and we will have a free tattoo station.
We are also looking for volunteers to help this event run smoothly. Police clearance is not required as parents will be present. Use this link to sign-up.
