I hope everyone is doing well and weathering what we hope is our final snow storm of the winter season. This upcoming week marks the conclusion of Ramadan, and we want to extend our warmest wishes to all families celebrating this sacred time.

I have a few additional items to highlight this week:

Jump Rope for Heart | Skip Off

We're hosting a skip-off event to wrap up our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser on Monday at 2pm. Currently, we've raised $865 of our $1200 goal! If we reach our goal, both Mrs. Sterne and I will take a pie to the face immediately after the skip-off. To donate, visit Jump Rope for Heart’s website here.

Precautions for the Solar Eclipse | Monday, April 8

On Monday, April 8, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary, beginning just before noon and ending by 2:00 p.m., with maximum coverage at 12:43 p.m. While it presents a unique learning opportunity, viewing the eclipse unsafely can cause serious eye damage. Students are encouraged to remain at school during lunch, staying indoors. If opting for home lunch, remind your child not to look at the sun. Direct viewing is hazardous; safe methods involve specialized glasses or professional guidance. Find safety information on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists.

Staffing Update

I wanted to share that we have hired Katya Banks as a Behaviour Support Worker and Leanne Roberts as an English as an Additional Language Assistant. Both individuals will bring valuable support to our students moving forward and we are looking forward to having them on our team! Both will start with us on April 15, 2024.

Jump Rope for Heart | Message from Mrs. Sterne

Welcome to another year of Jump Rope for Heart! Our event date will be April 8, 2024. Jump rope for heart is an event that brings kids across Canada together every year to build healthy habits for life in support of a great cause. Jump rope for heart helps students learn how to protect their heart and brain health while instilling the importance of helping others. Last year, we raised an amazing $1,085.

Our fundraising goal is $1,200 this year. Mr. Ross and Ms. Sterne will take a whip cream pie to the face if we meet our goal!

Popcorn Sales

This is a friendly reminder that Parent Council sells popcorn weekly to support families in need during the holiday season. Last year, we raised $2000, all going to BHS families! Popcorn is sold in homerooms on Tuesday mornings and then delivered by Thursday lunch. Each bag costs $2.50. Your support makes a meaningful impact in our local community!

Calgary Philharmonic Opportunity

Early this year, all of our students (Grades 1-6) visited that Calgary Philharmonic for a field trip provided by Parent Council. Ms. Van Es has been able to secure significantly discounted tickets (flat rate of $15/ ticket) for anyone interested in going as a family using the discount code MEETNW when purchasing tickets at the Calgary Philharmonic website. Discounted tickets apply to the following shows:

  • Soulful: Capathia Jenkins, April 5th and 6th
  • Spotlight On Your Phil, April 13th
  • Brilliant Basson, May 10th and 11th

Illia Ovcharenko performs Tchaikovsky, May 31st and Jun 1st
