I hope everyone had a great week as we get ready for our final week before Spring Break. We have a lot on the go next week with our Grade 6s heading to Outdoor School at Camp Chief Hector, some of our grade 3/4s heading to Fort Calgary, and Parent Teacher Interviews taking place this upcoming Thursday and Friday.

Thank you to all families who joined us for our K-2 Dance Pl3y performance today! The kids did an amazing job performing, and we are extremely grateful for parent council who provided this opportunity for our students!

I have a few additional items to highlight this week:

Community Cupboard | Message from Parent Council

There will be a bin at the front door for food donations for the Community Cupboard during parent teacher interviews. If able, families are encouraged to donate non-perishable items that can support our community. Some items they are always looking for are: Muffin mix, Fruit squeezes, Granola bars, Juice boxes, Other lunch snacks.

Thank you for your help!

Sewing Club

Our sewing club that ran from February- March was a success. We had twenty-five students that attended weekly. For their project, they made a hand sewn bunny. Many of the students would like to continue after spring break, but this time they would like to learn how to sew with sewing machines. Not all of the students who would like to participate have access to a sewing machine. If you happen to have a sewing machine that is gathering dust, but is in working order, and you would be willing to lend it to students at our school until the middle of June, please contact Ms. Austin. You can contact her by email at naaustin@cbe.ab.ca. All sewing machines will be labelled, stored appropriately, and returned at the end of the school year. Donations of materials such as shears, pins, or cotton fabric would also be appreciated.

Calgary Philharmonic Opportunity

This year all of our students (Grades 1-6) visited (or will visit) the Calgary Philharmonic for a field trip provided by Parent Council. Ms. Van Es has been able to secure significantly discounted tickets (flat rate of $15/ ticket) for anyone interested in going as a family using the discount code MEETNW when purchasing tickets at the Calgary Philharmonic website. Discounted tickets apply to the following shows:

  • Tchaikovsky 5, March 15th and 16th
  • A Night in Vienna with Sir Stephen Hough, March 23rd
  • Soulful: Capathia Jenkins, April 5th and 6th
  • Spotlight On Your Phil, April 13th
  • Brilliant Basson, May 10th and 11th
  • Illia Ovcharenko performs Tchaikovsky, May 31st and Jun 1st

I want to wish everyone a fantastic weekend! If you need any assistance, feel free to reach out—I'm here to help.

Take care,

Steve Ross

Jump Rope for Heart | Message from Mrs. Sterne

Welcome to another year of Jump Rope for Heart! Our event date will be April 8, 2024. Jump rope for heart is an event that brings kids across Canada together every year to build healthy habits for life in support of a great cause. Jump rope for heart helps students learn how to protect their heart and brain health while instilling the importance of helping others. Last year, we raised an amazing $1,085.

Our fundraising goal is $1,200 this year. Mr. Ross and Ms. Sterne will take a whip cream pie to the face if we meet our goal!

See the attached poster for more information.

Community Education Parent Program | Hosted by Hull Services

Hull Services is offering a FREE Community Parent Education Program (CPEP) for families from our school community. This program is lead by experienced Hull Services employees and runs once a week for 8 weeks. No referral or social service involvement needed, it’s free to any interested parent, adult and/or caregiver AND their children aged 5-12. The course focuses on teaching effective parenting skills, coupled with a children’s social skills group. The children’s group will focus on social skills such as how to listen, how to accept no/disappointment, how to express their feelings and how to deal with being angry/frustrated.

The topics they discuss in the parent group are:

*Relationship Building and Positive Behaviour

*Reducing Conflict and Managing Transitions Successfully

*Special Incentives and Collaborative Planning

*Consequences for Serious Problems

*Problem Solving Strategies

Children's Village School, in the NE community of Renfrew, will be hosting the upcoming course this spring. The start date of the course is Wednesday, April 17th, 2024 at 6:00pm. Please contact the school for important information about location, dates, times and how to register.

Lost and Found

Please come by the school to retrieve misplaced items from the lost and found between now and Spring Break. All remaining items will be donated at noon on the Friday, March 22.

Popcorn Sales

This is a friendly reminder that Parent Council sells popcorn weekly to support families in need during the holiday season. Last year, we raised $2000, all going to BHS families! Popcorn is sold in homerooms on Tuesday mornings and then delivered by Thursday lunch. Each bag costs $2.50. Your support makes a meaningful impact in our local community!
