Principal's Weekly Update | Feb. 2, 2024
It’s been a busy week here at Beddington Heights as our whole school is in the middle of the gymnastics unit in PE. We use what many refer to as an obstacle course to teach multiple physical literacy skills. Make sure to ask your kids what they are practicing!
Please remember to access your child’s report card which is available on your MyCBE Account right now. Instructions on accessing this can be found at the end of this message.
I have a few items to highlight this week:
Dogs not permitted on school property
We want to remind families that, in accordance with a city bylaw, dogs are not allowed on school premises. This measure is in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all students, staff, and visitors. We kindly request your cooperation in refraining from bringing dogs onto school property during drop-off, pick-up, or any school-related events. Your understanding and adherence to this bylaw are greatly appreciated as we work together to maintain a positive and respectful environment for all.
A message from Parent Council
Join us for the Parent Council's monthly meeting this Tuesday at 6:30pm via Microsoft Teams. Your input is vital, and we welcome your active participation in shaping our school community. Your support makes a difference. We welcome and new faces to the conversation and hope to see you there!
Popcorn Sales
This is a friendly reminder that Parent Council sells popcorn weekly to support families in need during the holiday season. Last year, we raised $2000, all going to BHS families! Popcorn is sold in homerooms on Tuesday mornings and then delivered by Thursday lunch. Each bag costs $2.50. Your support makes a meaningful impact in our local community!
IPP Signing
If your child is on an Individualized Program Plan (IPP), you will receive an updated copy of their IPP. Should you have any questions regarding the IPP, kindly reach out to your child's teacher. Once you have reviewed and are satisfied with the update, please sign and return a copy for the school's records.

Black History Month is an opportunity for schools to amplify and spotlight the innovative, courageous, and inspiring voices, stories, and contributions of Black Canadians and communities. Throughout the month of February, the Calgary Public Library is hosting events dedicated to celebrating the lives, legacies, and voices of Black peoples and communities. More information on these events can be found at the bottom of this message.

January Report Cards
By the end of January, your child’s report card will be available to view in your MyCBE account. The report card is one of the ways teachers communicate how your child is progressing in their learning. Teachers may also share learning progress through parent/teacher conferences, your child’s daily work and assignments, and other ongoing communication with you.
What to Expect in Your Child’s Report Card
CBE began implementing the new Alberta Education Curriculum:
- Fall 2022 start:
- Mathematics (K-3)
- English Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
- Physical Education and Wellness (K-6)
- Fall 2023 start:
- Mathematics (4-6)
- English Language Arts and Literature (4-6)
- French Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
- Science (K-3)
In the new curriculum, some things students learn may be new or may have previously been taught in higher grades. Students could be missing foundational pieces from previous grades, and their report card indicators might not be as high as before. This is expected when there is a new curriculum. It might take more than one school year to build these foundational skills. Even though each grade has its own curriculum, many ideas come up again each year, helping students to build on what they already know and do well.
Teachers continue to make learning interesting and inspiring and are adapting to students' needs during this transition. As always, if you have questions about your child's learning, please reach out to their teacher.
Fun Lunch | Cedars Deli on February 22
Make your orders for the next Fun Lunch at healthyhunger.ca. Deadline to order is February 16, 2024.
Black History Month (continued)
On Tuesday, Feb. 13, the Central Library will feature Black History Month: Jon Cornish “Power and Privilege in an Intersectional Life." Cornish will unravel the complexities of his unique journey as a person of mixed heritage, navigating a world rife with stereotypes and misconceptions. He will highlight the intricate interplay of race, culture, and geography in shaping identity while challenging the audience to re-examine their perceptions, biases, and often-mistaken assumptions. On Sunday, Feb. 25, the Central Library in partnership with the Chinook County Historical Society will be hosting a screening and discussion of the film John Ware Reclaimed by filmmaker Cheryl Foggo, which follows her quest to re-examine the mythology surrounding John Ware, the Black cowboy who settled Alberta before the turn of the 20th Century. Foggo's research uncovers who this iconic figure might have been, and what his legacy means in terms of anti-Black racism.
