Principal's Weekly Update | Feb 9, 2024

February 10th marks both the Lunar and Chinese New Years. As we welcome the Year of the Dragon, I extend warm wishes to all celebrating this joyous occasion. May this festive time bring happiness, good health, and prosperity to your homes.

Students have had a great week as they participated in Mission Impossible all week as our gymnastics unit wrap up.

I have a few items to highlight this week:

Teacher and Staff Convention/ Family Day

Please note that next week is an extra short week as school staff will be attending conventions next Thursday and Friday, meaning there is no school for students past on Thursday and Friday. In addition, Monday is Family Day, meaning the school will be closed.

Increased appetites at school

We've observed a notable rise in students requesting extra food during lunchtime, which is typical as the school year progresses and appetites fluctuate. Kindly check with your child to determine if they need more food in their lunches. Feel free to contact me if you require additional support from the school regarding lunches.

Wishing everyone a fantastic weekend! If you need any assistance, feel free to reach out—I'm here to help.

Take care,

Steve Ross

Black History Month (continued)

On Tuesday, Feb. 13, the Central Library will feature Black History Month: Jon Cornish “Power and Privilege in an Intersectional Life." Cornish will unravel the complexities of his unique journey as a person of mixed heritage, navigating a world rife with stereotypes and misconceptions. He will highlight the intricate interplay of race, culture, and geography in shaping identity while challenging the audience to re-examine their perceptions, biases, and often-mistaken assumptions. On Sunday, Feb. 25, the Central Library in partnership with the Chinook County Historical Society will be hosting a screening and discussion of the film John Ware Reclaimed by filmmaker Cheryl Foggo, which follows her quest to re-examine the mythology surrounding John Ware, the Black cowboy who settled Alberta before the turn of the 20th Century. Foggo's research uncovers who this iconic figure might have been, and what his legacy means in terms of anti-Black racism.
