Principal's Weekly Update | Jan 12, 2024

I hope this message finds you well, and you enjoyed a restful winter break filled with rest and relaxation. We have had a great first week back with students, as we embark on the second half of the academic school year. Please note that Monday is a non-instructional day, so there will be no school for students.

I have a few items to highlight this week:

Blue Days

Due to the current weather conditions, when temperatures are below -20 degrees Celsius including wind chill (“Blue Days”), students will not go outside on these exceptionally cold days. On "Blue Days," our doors open at 7:45 am, allowing students to enter 15 minutes early for a smooth transition into the classroom. Please avoid dropping off students before this time to prevent them from waiting outside in the cold prior to the school opening at 7:45. If temperatures warm up to -19 degrees Celsius and above, students will have outdoor recess, so ensure your children are dressed appropriately for the cold. If you need assistance with warm clothing for your child, please contact Ms. Austin at naaustin@cbe.ab.ca.

Student Teachers

This week, we are thrilled to introduce five new student teachers from Mount Royal University to our school community. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to the following individuals:

  • Room 15 | Duha Abu Farha (Mrs. Connell)
  • Room 14 | Sara Jagshi (Ms. Hansen)
  • Room 12 | Kelsey McAdam (Mrs. Pulvermacher)
  • Room 6 | Kayleigh Wells (Mr. Beechey)
  • Room 5 | Allison Fudge (Ms. Winston)

Nation’s Vision

Nation's Vision is an in-school eyecare clinic that provides comprehensive eye exams directly onsite for school children across Calgary.  Exams are free-of-charge. If your child requires glasses, Nation's Vision provides financial assistance for our families and will notify you if your child needs glasses by phone and email. A large selection of glasses is available on-site at the school, so you can stop by at the end of the day to help your child select glasses if required. Please complete the consent form sent home with your child this week and have them return it to the school. Only children with completed consent forms, are eligible for this program. The deadline to return these consent forms is January 31st if you would like your child to access this service.

Staffing Updates

We have exciting news about two staffing changes. Eashel Waqar will be taking over for Mrs. MacPhee during her maternity leave, teaching Kindergarten for the rest of the school year. Also, thanks to additional funding from the Alberta Government, Mrs. Levesconte will be back full-time, starting January 22nd, until the end of June. She will be focusing on targeted literacy and math interventions for students, working alongside teachers.

Take care,

Steve Ross
