Principal's Weekly Update | Oct 13, 2023
Today was the first of our two annual Culture Days, where students had the chance to share elements of their cultural backgrounds with their peers, fostering a deeper understanding of the diversity within our school community. If you'd like to see photos of what the students presented, please check out our Instagram page.
In addition to Culture Day, our grade 5/6 homeroom classes hosted the first Celebration of Learning, where students did an outstanding job sharing their educational journey with us!
I have a few additional items to share with you this week:
School Photos
Mark your calendars! School photo day is just around the corner, taking place this coming Tuesday. The weekend is a great time for kids to practice their best smiles in order to capture those memorable moments!
Fun Lunch | The Saucy Break Company – A message from Parent Council
Our next Fun lunch is coming up soon! Order now at https://healthyhunger.ca/ . The cut-off date for the next order is Tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 14. Our kids will be able to enjoy pretzels, buns and sandwiches with fresh fruit and vegetables as a side. Kids can choose from many options such as the sweet sugar & cinnamon pretzel or the pizza pretzel. The buns will be baked by the Saucy Bread Company in the morning and then delivered fresh to our school. Delicious! Please note that the sandwiches are quite large. The Saucy Bread Company recommends a half sandwich order for the younger kids and a full sandwich for the older kids. Thank you for supporting the Beddington Heights Parent Council.
Secret Path Week
Next week, students will participate in the "Walk for Wenjack" event during their PE classes. This event is a commemoration of Chanie Wenjack, who tragically passed away in 1966 at the age of 9 while trying to escape from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School in Kenora, Ontario. Our students will engage in discussions about Chanie Wenjack's legacy and take part in the walk during their upcoming PE classes. More information on the history of Secret Path Week can be found here.
Calgary Firefighters Toy Association | Annual Children’s Christmas Party
The Calgary Firefighters Toy Association is having its 55th Annual Children’s Christmas Party. The purpose of the event is to support families in our communities who, due to economic or personal circumstances, may not be able to provide an experience for their families. The event will be held on December 17th, 2023 at the Telus Convention Centre from 9am-5pm. The location is on the LRT route. Families will be able to choose the time slot they attend. Time slots will be removed once they fill up. You will be able to attend for 60-90 minutes.
If you are interested in this experience, please contact Ms. Austin by email at naaustin@cbe.ab.ca. I will then forward your email address to the Calgary Firefighter Toy Association. They will send you a link to an online application that you will need to complete and submit by November 13th. Spots do fill up quickly. If you are successful in your application, you will then receive an invitation with your time slot no later than December 10th.
I hope everyone has a great weekend, and if you have any questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our office at 403-777-6610.
Take care,
Steve Ross

Popcorn Sales Changes
Starting next week, the Parent Council will be restarting popcorn sales with some changes to make the process more efficient and reduce the time commitment for students and adults. Here are the key details:
- Sales Timing: Popcorn sales will take place Tuesday mornings from 8-8:30am, coinciding with the breakfast cart's schedule.
- Ordering: Students can purchase popcorn and place their orders during this Tuesday morning time slot. They should bring their money with them.
- Delivery: Popcorn orders will not be delivered to classrooms in time for lunch on Thursday.
- Pricing: Each bag of popcorn will cost $2.50.
- Purpose: All proceeds from popcorn sales will be used to support Beddington Heights Families through Christmas Hampers.
These adjustments aim to streamline the process and make it more convenient for everyone involved. Thank you for your support!
Dropping Students Off at School
We hope your students are adjusting well to their new learning spaces. As we move forward, we kindly request that you drop off your students at the outside doors in the morning, if they are still open, or at the office if they happen to be running late. This small change not only enhances security but also provides our students with an opportunity to develop greater independence.
Thank you for your cooperation and support in ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for our students.
