Principal's Weekly Update | Oct 6, 2023

I want to extend my warmest wishes for a happy and peaceful Thanksgiving weekend to all of you. May this time be filled with love, gratitude, and cherished moments with your loved ones.

As a reminder, the school will be closed on Monday, so there is no school for students.

I have a few additional items to share with you this week:

Dropping Students Off at School

We hope your students are adjusting well to their new learning spaces. As we move forward, we kindly request that you drop off your students at the outside doors in the morning, if they are still open, or at the office if they happen to be running late. This small change not only enhances security but also provides our students with an opportunity to develop greater independence.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for our students.

Culture Day

On this upcoming Friday, October 13th, we extend a warm invitation to all students to join us in celebrating the vibrant tapestry of cultures during our exciting BHS Culture Day! On this special occasion, students have the opportunity to become cultural ambassadors, proudly showcasing the richness of their backgrounds. We encourage students to wear attire representative of their own cultural heritage and share with their classmates any aspects they are comfortable discussing, such as traditional dances, music, cuisine (can showcase their traditional foods, but unfortunately due to CBE policies, students cannot share food with others), and celebrations from their unique backgrounds. This promises to be a day filled with learning, respect, and a deep appreciation for the diversity that enriches our school community.

Halloween Dance – Message from Parent Council

Parent Council will be hosting our annual Halloween Dance on October 26th, from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Come dressed up, or as you are! There will be concessions, guessing games and a craft table to add to the fun! All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. This could be parents/guardians, grandparents, friends’ parents, etc. There will be someone at the door to admit everyone so we can have a fun and safe night!

We will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Beddington Heights Community Cupboard. Some ideas are:

Gogo Squeeze, Fruit cups, Juice boxes, Granola bars, Kraft Dinner, Taco/Burrito kits, Rice, Pasta, Hamburger Helper, Cereal

Thank you and we look forward to seeing everyone there!

Terry Fox Update

I wanted to let you know that our students, staff and families donated a total of 1269.68 to the Terry Fox Foundation in support of cancer research! I want to thank Mrs. Young, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Pulvemacher and Mrs. Sterne for all their work organizing everything related to Terry Fox this year.

Child and Youth Well-Being: A Webinar Series for Parents and Guardians

The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join us in an online series focusing on child and youth well-being. These sessions will be hosted in partnership with experts from Alberta Health Services and will explore topics such as vaping, brain development, mental health, and sexual health.

CBE educators believe that parents and guardians can inspire their kids to make healthy lifestyle choices and increase protective factors – in order to do so, they need the right tools and information.    Well-being is a precondition for learning. As our understanding of student well-being continues to evolve, it is important for those that support children and youth to stay up to date on the same information so everyone can support student success.

The intention of the series is to advance student well-being by raising family and caregiver’s understanding of a variety of health-related topics.

I hope everyone has a great long weekend, and if you have any questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our office at 403-777-6610.

Take care,

Steve Ross

Popcorn Sales Changes

Starting next week, the Parent Council will be restarting popcorn sales with some changes to make the process more efficient and reduce the time commitment for students and adults. Here are the key details:

  1. Sales Timing: Popcorn sales will take place Tuesday mornings from 8-8:30am, coinciding with the breakfast cart's schedule.
  2. Ordering: Students can purchase popcorn and place their orders during this Tuesday morning time slot. They should bring their money with them.
  3. Delivery: Popcorn orders will not be delivered to classrooms in time for lunch on Thursday.
  4. Pricing: Each bag of popcorn will cost $2.50.
  5. Purpose: All proceeds from popcorn sales will be used to support Beddington Heights Families through Christmas Hampers.

These adjustments aim to streamline the process and make it more convenient for everyone involved. Thank you for your support!
