Principal's Weekly Update | Sept 28, 2023
A reminder that tomorrow the school will be closed for a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Sept. 30th Day in Lieu) which means there is no school for students. There are many events happening across the city in the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation including events at Telus Spark and Arts Commons among others. Click the links for more details.
I have a few additional items to share with you this week:
Popcorn Sales Changes
Starting next week, Parent Council will be restarting popcorn sales with some changes to make the process more efficient and reduce the time commitment for students and adults. Here are the key details:
- Sales Timing: Popcorn sales will take place Tuesday mornings from 8-8:30am, coinciding with the breakfast cart's schedule.
- Ordering: Students can purchase popcorn and place their orders during this Tuesday morning time slot. They should bring their money with them.
- Delivery: Popcorn orders will be delivered to classrooms in time for lunch on Thursday.
- Pricing: Each bag of popcorn will cost $2.50.
- Purpose: All proceeds from popcorn sales will be used to support Beddington Heights Families through Christmas Hampers.
These adjustments aim to streamline the process and make it more convenient for everyone involved. Thank you for your support!
Prayer Room at BHS
Starting this Monday, students who wish to pray during the day will have access to the small room adjacent to the library for prayer sessions. Prayer sessions will be scheduled at 1:15 for those who wish to participate. For students who prefer to pray after school, we will have a space designated in the library for this.
Literacy Instruction in the CBE
Education has evolved from whole language instruction to the science of reading, emphasizing evidence-based practices rooted in cognitive psychology and linguistics. This shift prioritizes phonics, decoding skills, and explicit instruction, recognizing their critical role in building strong literacy foundations for all students, irrespective of their backgrounds or abilities.
Please see the attached document for more information on this shift. Home-Literacy-Support-Sheet.pdf
International Walk to School Week | Oct. 2-6
International Walk to School Week gives children, families and caregivers, school communities and community leaders an opportunity to be part of a global event as they celebrate the many benefits of walking.
Walkers from around the world walk to school together for various reasons — all hoping to create communities that are safe places to walk. More information can be found here.
I hope everyone has a great long weekend, and if you have any questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our office at 403-777-6610.

Steve Ross

Annual Forms to be Completed
- Online forms:
As communicated through a system wide School Messenger earlier this week, many forms will now be completed online through your MyCBE Account including the Demographic Verification form and the Annual Authorization. To locate these forms, please log in to your MyCBE account and select Online Forms and School registration on the left-hand side.
- Hard Copy Forms:
Your child will come home with 2 forms either earlier this week or next week.
- Admirable Use Policy form – Students need to have a signed copy of this form returned to their homeroom teacher in order to access the school’s technology (Chromebooks, iPads etc.)
- Brown Baggers Program form – Allows you to identify which foods should/should not be given to your child in the event they have forgotten their lunch on a given day.
- Printable Forms (attached):
The following forms are either informational or are available to be printed off and returned to the school. Should you require a hard copy of the form, please contact the office, and we will ensure one is sent home with your child.
- Student Health Plan
- This form is not required for all students.
- It is only required if:
- a physical or medical condition may affect your childs attendance at school
- medication is to be taken at school by your child
- It is reviewed and updated annually or sooner if there is a change in the student’s health concern or school registration.
- Annual Volunteer Registration Form – Needs to be completed every year in order to volunteer within the school or on field trips. Also requires a current (within the last 5 years) police check on file with the school. Contact the office if you have any questions.
Assessment within Alberta’s New Curriculum
Our families have been invited to attend a session put on by Alberta Regional Consortium on September 28 at 6-7pm. The session will take place at CN Gunn school and will:
- Examine the ways students are assessed and evaluated
- Explore learning outcomes expected at each grade level
- Understand the structure and architecture of new curriculum
- With this knowledge in hand, we will conclude with some easy-to-use strategies that you can use at home with your child.
All families are welcome to attend.
